What is the busbar span (maximum distance between insulators) for LV panels?

The maximum busbar support span depends on the busbar cross-section, material, and expected short-circuit current. For a 40×5mm copper busbar in a standard UAE LV distribution board (up to 25kA symmetrical short circuit), supports at 400–600mm centres are typical. For larger busbars or higher fault levels (40kA in main incoming switchboards), reduce the span to 300–400mm. Always calculate busbar span against the expected short-circuit force using the panel design standards.

Can I use drum type insulators outdoors or in humid environments?

Accepted Answer

Thermoplastic drum insulators have limited resistance to prolonged outdoor UV exposure and high humidity. For outdoor busbar installations (in weatherproof enclosures where the insulator is exposed to condensation or humidity), ceramic drum insulators are preferred due to their superior tracking resistance and immunity to moisture absorption. In standard UAE indoor LV switchboards with adequate IP protection, thermoplastic insulators are acceptable.

How are drum type insulators secured in a busbar frame?

Accepted Answer

Drum insulators are typically secured using a through-bolt that passes through the panel frame or busbar support bracket, through the centre of the drum, and is tightened with a nut. The busbar then rests in the groove or saddle at the top of the drum. Some drum insulator designs have a clamp that holds the busbar down into the saddle. Ensure the bolt is fully tightened and a locking washer is used to prevent vibration loosening.

Yes — Noor Al Bawadi stocks drum insulators with saddle grooves sized for the most common UAE standard busbar widths: 20mm, 25mm, 30mm, 32mm, 40mm, 50mm, 60mm, 80mm and 100mm. When ordering, specify the busbar width (not the current rating) so we can supply the correct saddle size. The saddle width should match the busbar width for a secure, centred fit.
