Earth leakage protection prevents electric shock and electrical fires by detecting unwanted current flowing to earth (ground fault current). A Micron Electric UK Earth Leakage Relay (ELR) paired with a Core Balance Current Transformer (CBCT) provides sensitive earth fault detection in LV distribution boards, motor control panels and industrial installations — tripping the circuit breaker or contactor when earth leakage exceeds the preset threshold.
The CBCT (a toroidal current transformer) is installed around all live conductors of the circuit (L1, L2, L3 and N). Under healthy conditions, the magnetic fields from load current cancel out and the CBCT produces zero output. When earth leakage occurs (a fault path to earth), the currents no longer balance, and the CBCT produces a small residual current signal. The ELR detects this signal and triggers a relay output to trip the upstream breaker or contactor.

An ELCB (Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker) is an older voltage-operated device — largely obsolete and not suitable for modern UAE installations. An RCD (Residual Current Device) is a self-contained earth leakage breaker without a separate CT. An ELR+CBCT combination is preferred for main distribution boards because the CBCT can handle large cable sizes and the ELR provides adjustable sensitivity and time-delay settings for selective protection coordination. Many UAE electrical engineers and panel builders search for ELCB (Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker) when specifying earth fault protection. The modern DEWA-preferred replacement for the obsolete voltage-operated ELCB is the ELR + CBCT combination: an Earth Leakage Relay paired with a Core Balance Current Transformer.
