Why is it dangerous to open-circuit a CT secondary?

When a CT primary carries current, the secondary must always have a load connected (or be short-circuited). If the secondary is open-circuited with primary current flowing, the CT core saturates and generates a very high, potentially lethal voltage at the secondary terminals. Always short-circuit the CT secondary before disconnecting instruments. Micron Electric UK CTs include clearly labelled S1/S2 terminals — never leave these open while the primary is energised.

What is CT burden and why does it matter?

CT burden is the total impedance (expressed in VA) of all devices connected to the CT secondary: ammeter, energy meter, wiring resistance, etc. The CT must be rated for at least the total burden of all connected devices. If the CT burden is exceeded, the CT core saturates and accuracy degrades significantly. For a 5VA CT with a 3VA ammeter and 1VA wiring, the remaining burden capacity is 1VA — sufficient. Always calculate total secondary burden before specifying the CT.

What is the difference between a ring-type CT and a wound-primary CT?

A ring-type (toroidal) CT has a donut-shaped core with no built-in primary conductor — the primary is the busbar or cable that passes through the centre of the CT. Ring-type CTs are used for larger primary currents (100A and above). A wound-primary CT has the primary winding wound around the core, making it self-contained — used for smaller currents (below 100A) where the primary current is too low for an accurate ring-type measurement.

Can I use a Micron Electric UK CT for both an ammeter and an energy meter simultaneously?

Yes — you can connect multiple metering devices in series on the CT secondary (S1-S2 terminals). The total burden of all connected devices must not exceed the CT's rated burden. For example, connect the ammeter and energy meter in series on the CT secondary — their burdens add together. Ensure the total (ammeter VA + energy meter VA + wiring) does not exceed the CT's rated burden (e.g., 5VA or 10VA).

Do Micron Electric UK CTs need to be installed in a specific orientation?

Ring-type CTs can be installed in any orientation (horizontal, vertical, at any angle) as long as the primary conductor passes through the centre of the CT bore. Mark the P1 (primary in) side to ensure correct polarity for the ammeter or energy meter. Reversing polarity causes the meter to read backwards (negative current) — correct this by swapping S1 and S2 connections at the meter, not by physically reversing the CT.

How to Select the Correct CT for Your Panel

Select the primary current rating that matches (or slightly exceeds) the maximum expected load current of the circuit. A 400A/5A CT is correct for a 400A incomer; using a 1000A/5A CT for a 400A circuit would reduce meter accuracy (reading at 40% of full scale). The CT burden (VA) must equal or exceed the total burden of all devices connected to the CT secondary.
